UNC Hospitals, which began as North Carolina Memorial Hospital in
1952, has grown to become a major academic medical center, dedicated
to providing advanced healthcare in patient care and medical research.
It was recently chosen as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country
by AARP. The 665-bed hospital includes: NC Memorial Hospital, NC Children's
Hospital, NC Women's Hospital and NC Neurosciences Hospital.
UNC Hospitals is staffed by 471 resident and 750 attending physicians,
providing some of the most advanced medical care available in the
South. With its wide availability of medical opportunities, UNC Hospitals
has become highly acclaimed for its transplantation program and expanded
outpatient care capacity within the UNC Ambulatory Care Center.
In 2002, the Children's and Women's Hospitals moved to new state-of-the-art
facilities designed to offer high-quality health care in a comfortable,
family-friendly environment. UNC Hospitals is a public, academic medical
center operated by and for the people of North Carolina. The Hospitals'
mission is to provide high quality patient care, to educate health
care professionals, to advance research and to provide community service.
Each year UNC Hospitals cares for residents from all 100 counties
in North Carolina and several surrounding states. About 30 percent
of UNC Hospitals' patients come from Orange and surrounding counties.
